This is the part most listings leave out, and it is the difference between a useful purchase and a blown fuse.

A car's cigarette-lighter socket is usually fused at 10-15 amps, which works out at roughly 120-180 watts in practice. That is the real ceiling when the inverter is plugged into the socket — regardless of what the inverter itself is rated for.

Through the socket, expect it to comfortably run: laptop chargers, phone and tablet chargers, camera batteries, small fans, LED lights, a games console.

It will NOT run through the socket: kettles, hair dryers, irons, microwaves, heaters, power tools, or anything with a heating element. These draw far more than the socket fuse allows and will blow it.

To draw the inverter's full rating, it has to be wired directly to the battery terminals with suitable cable and an inline fuse. That is an installation job, not a plug-in one. If you need high power, budget for that fitting.

USB Fast Charge Ports

Alongside the mains socket there are USB ports for phones, torches, headlamps, GPS units, dash cams and tablets — the things you actually charge most often in a car.

Metal Housing

Metal rather than plastic, which matters for an inverter — the housing carries heat away instead of trapping it. Thermal protection and switch control are built in.
